Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition 2015-2016

Mr. Folkerth & Mrs. McKeen

Class Description: This is a college-level course for students who wish to achieve excellence in writing and in literary analysis.  Such courses are demanding and contain adult themes. Maturity regarding subject matter is expected.

Expectations & Assignments

Participation: Students are expected to complete all reading when it is assigned. Please do not use Spark Notes (or similar resources) instead of reading actual text. You are expected to participate in discussions. Discussion will be an integral and primary component of this course.  Students will be subjectively graded on their participation (or lack thereof) each quarter.

Vocabulary: You will receive a school-issued vocabulary book. There will be quizzes on Friday.

Text Reduction: You will fill out a Text Reduction sheet for every major work that we read. These will be collected and graded when we finish each work. These sheets will be valuable as review before the AP exam.

PrĂ©cis: You will read a peer-reviewed scholarly article about each major work from a reputable journal. You will summarize and evaluate the argument of the article.  This will serve not only to give you additional insight into the novel, but expose you to professional expository writing.

In-Class Essays: Approximately twice a month, you will practice timed essays for the AP exam.  These essays will come from previous AP exams or be similar questions.

Multiple Choice Tests: Approximately once a month, you will take multiple choice tests in anticipation of the multiple choice section on the AP exam.  These may not be recorded.

Other Assignments: Other homework, projects, or essay rewrites will be assigned.  Each will have its own rubric.

Midterm Exam: The midterm will be a multiple choice exam that is issued by the AP Board.  It will have short passages and poetry selections.

Grading: The school grading scale and rules about academic integrity will apply.
