Language Arts

Language Arts includes reading, writing, grammar, handwriting, and spelling.

Our students will be perfecting their cursive writing this year. By the second semester of third grade, they should be able to write all of their work in cursive.

Spelling lists are given on Mondays. Throughout the week the students will have homework to help practice their words. Tests are given on Fridays. Please study spelling lists nightly. The lists are based on phonics skills as well as high-frequency words that are commonly misspelled.

During the school week we require our students to read at least 20 minutes a night. This may be done independently as well as read aloud aother person. This time can be recorded as part of the Sharon Elementary Reading Program (Dig Deep....Reading is The Treasure)

Our district has technology benchmarks for each grade level. One of the benchmarks for third grade is keyboarding. The students will be learning proper hand placement and practicing in school. Any practice at home would be beneficial as well.

Math

By third grade students MUST know their addition and subtraction facts. We will not be spending much time practicing these basic facts in class. We encourage reviewing these facts several times a week. This will make it much easier for the children to move on to higher levels in math.We will be learning multiplication this year. Students must learn their multiplication facts up through 12 x 12 by spring. When we begin multiplication in late fall, the students will be required to practice multiplaction facts every evening. Starting later this fall we will begin doing weekly multiplication timed tests. Students will be working towards the goal of earning a multiplication sundae!

Social Studies

Third graders will be learning about map skills in the beginning of the school year. As we progress through the year they will be studying history, communities, and government.

Science

This year in science we will be learning about the following topics:

  • Rocks and Minerals (Earth Science)
  • Forces and Motion (Physical Science)
  • Life Cycles (Life Science)
