Dear Parent(s) and Guardian(s),

Happy October!  We are still trying to settle into our routine.  We are still reviewing skills and also learning many new and exciting concepts.  We are anxious for this month to begin.  We have a lot of fun filled learning activities planned.

The Reading program is well on its way and the students are reading like crazy.   I am very impressed.   If your child has been forgetting please remember it is important for them to return a book at least once a week.  If you find a book is to hard or to easy please return it with a note attached.  To keep the program successful in our classroom, I am asking that your child read at least 4 books for the months of October, November, and December. In January, February, and March the requirement is at least 5 books.  Your child will bring home a book that is to be read.  Once they can read the book easily, they will bring the book back to school and read part of it to a parent volunteer. Reminder these books should be easy to help build self confidence, review basic high frequency words, to enjoy reading and to work on reading fluency. In class we will be working on the instruction level books to get them ready for the next set of books.  Each month, they will receive a sticker once the goal is reached.  Some children will read more than the required number of books each month – GREAT!  Remember some children are ready to read to our volunteers in a few days, some in one day, and for others it may be a week.  I do not expect a book to come back every day. To verify that you have heard your child practice reading their book, I am asking for you to sign the record sheet that is placed inside the folder in HOME book bag.  Also a great way to keep track of minutes read for the school reading program (Dig Deep….Reading is a Treasure) is to keep the calendar in your child’s take home reading folder.  The volunteers have already placed some in folders and hopefully everyone will have one by the end of next week.

We have also started our Reading Rotations in the room.  During this time I spend time with small groups to guide them in reading. I also have started individual conferences with the kiddos to make sure they are reading the right level book (a, b, c…). I will conference one on one with your kids once a month if not more to determine if they are ready for the next basket. Your child should read about 10 books before going to the next basket which is about once a month.

At the end of September the students were given the Gates McGinitie Reading Assessment. I will be going over the results with you at conference time in November.  I will be sending home a sign-up sheet for conferences later this month.  Conference dates are Nov. 1st, 3rd, and 10th.  I will need to meet with EVERY family this fall.  In the spring the conferences are invite only.

We are continuing our spelling practice and we will be taking a monthly test of all the sight words or word wall words for the month of September.  I will send a list home to practice.  If your child misses any on the monthly test please practice these words at home and we will also revisit them in school. Remember that the word wall words are the words that your child needs to know for first grade.   We have successfully practiced all short (a) vowel words and we now practicing the short (i) vowel words this month.

In math we are having fun.  Please check your child’s folder every night for the Home Link homework.  I do not give any assignments on Friday or during the week we are testing.  You should have received the Unit 1 progress report.  I will further explain the progress reports to you at conference time.

In social studies/science we finished up our all about me/community/school unit and apples.  Now we are discussing living things and studying bats.  The first week of October we will be studying pumpkins.  If anyone would like to donate a small pumpkin for an experiment it would be wonderful.

I also want to thank any parent(s) who has donated food and other items to our room.  I truly appreciate your generosity.  We can always use cleaning wipes if you choose to donate them to our room.  We are trying to keep it a clean environment.  Other items that are always needed are small toys/treasures for our room treasure box.  Usually parent(s) donate the toys from fast food restaurants etc….   Anything is welcome.  I know I love cleaning my kids toy room and bedrooms to find treasures for the box J

I hope your child is enjoying his/her first grade experience. I know I am. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me. I am here to help.  I am looking forward to seeing you at parent/teacher conferences in November.
